Community urged to back Pink Shirt Day

Fri 16 Apr 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

With Pink Shirt Day fast approaching, the community is being encouraged to help spread the word. On Wednesday April 28 people from across the globe will don pink, to make a stand against bullying. Safety in Schools For Queers (SS4Q) is asking organisations, schools and community groups to also sign up to its list of supporters. "Children and young people need to know they will be supported when they speak out about bullying. Schools cannot solve these problems alone," says SS4Q spokeswoman Laressa Donaldson. She says bullying is a serious problem in New Zealand schools; in December 2008 a major international report ranked New Zealand second worst among 37 countries when it comes to bullying in primary schools. "That's atrocious; Pink Shirt Day is a chance for all of us to make a public stand against bullying and for dignity, equality and respect." Donaldson says aside from wearing a pink shirt on April 28 and encouraging others to do the same, supporters can circulate the website address http://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/, share the group's information sheet and poster, or even host their own Pink Shirt Day event. Anyone who is interested in running an event or would like more information can email Pink Shirt Day Aotearoa for resources and support: info@pinkshirtday.org.nz
