Review: MOS Electro House Sessions 3

Mon 12 Apr 2010 In: Music View at NDHA

It's not often I hear a cd that makes me want dance in an incredibly over-the-top fashion on my kitchen bench on a Sunday afternoon. As a lesbian whose music taste revolves around the terms rock 'n roll and post-punk, the Ministry of Sound's Electro House Sessions 3 is not the kind of album I would generally buy. But when a copy was kindly put into my hands I decided, well, I'm writing for GayNZ.com so why not give it a whirl. An hour later my girlfriend had to extract the glowstick from my hand and talk me down from the bench. Ok, I'm kidding, I didn't actually dance on the bench. But if I had pushed play on this cd on a Friday or Saturday night, watch out fruit bowl and toaster, it may have just happened. The third offering in the series, Electro House 3 is mixed by established DJ/producers Klaas and up and comers The Only. It features reworkings of tracks by Richard Vission, The Bloody Beetroots and tune that's apparently a "club chart monster" Out My Bitch by T-Rek. I'm an absolute sucker for sweet-as-sugar Temper Trap song Sweet Disposition, which is given a makeover here that keeps all the sweetness intact while adding dancefloor punch. I absolutely adore the remix of You've Changed, by Lauren Flax and featuring out Australian musician Sia. There is plenty on offer for those of us who like alternative music and also like to dance. The retake of Simian Mobile Disco's Cruel Intentions (which features Gossip's Beth Ditto) is the stand-out for me. My post-punk heart be still, it also has a reworking of the Editors track Papillion. While it doesn't make my blood boil, I can't say I love it more than the original, as it somehow loses part of the New Order vibe that made me love the song in the first place. But overall, evoking a packed and sweaty gay club at 2.37am on a Saturday morning, Electro House 3 is something that will get even a rock 'n roll loving lesbian in the mood for a night out on the gay-town.
