Former 'N Sync member Lance Bass is sponsoring a gay-friendly prom in Mississippi after a lesbian teenager was tricked into attending a "fake prom" earlier this month. The Advocate reports members of Green Day and lesbian celebrity chef Cat Cora are also backing the event in Tupelo, Mississippi, which is open to all students, regardless of their sexual orientation. Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition spokesman Matthew Sheffield has told the Associated Press that Bass will attend. It follows the high-profile case of 18-year-old Itawamba Agricultural High School student Constance McMillen, who took her school district to court after being barred from bringing a female date to her prom. A judge ruled she could not be banned – but when she turned up to the event she found it was a 'fake prom' with only a handful of other students in attendance. Parents had organised another prom, which she was not invited to.
