Out Takes appeals for sponsors

Sun 21 Mar 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Out Takes Reel Queer Film Festival organisers are appealing to the community to "step up" and provide the sponsorship they need to ensure they can offer a full selection of films. The 2010 festival is currently set to run from May 27 to June 9 in Auckland and Wellington. Auckland coordinator Lil Cameron says it's not all popcorn and candy in the lead up to the festival - more like blood, sweat and empty pockets. "In 2008 we didn't have the funding for a film festival at all; 2009 saw us clawing back despite the recession and celebrating with a huge after-party for opening night." Cameron says this year the team is high on passion but low on sponsorship. "We need the community to step up,” she says. Out Takes is registered as a charity and everyone who works on the festival is a volunteer. It relies on ticket sales and the goodwill of sponsors to keep it going. “The way things are currently, we won't be able to bring all the films we'd like to New Zealand, even with a reduced selection.  I don't think people realise the true cost of screening films from around the world – it can cost up to $5,000 per film,” Cameron says. Together with her merry band of volunteers, Cameron is putting out an appeal for film sponsors. “We really need some big sponsors to step up and help us out with cash for the films. It's a great way for them to see how much their contribution helps too, because that film will become ‘their' film of the festival. Much more gratifying than just seeing your logo in the programme.” Interested parties can contact the Out Takes team at sponsorship@outtakes.org.nz or find out more at outtakes.org.nz.
