Central Auckland will be buzzing with a variety of gay characters in coming months, as popular puppet show Avenue Q, revolutionary rock opera Rent, and camp comedian Julian Clary all take to the stage. Outrageous songs like The Internet Is For Porn and If You Were Gay have delighted audiences around the world is Avenue Q, a warped puppet/human Sesame Street for adults. Coming to Auckland's Civic Theatre in May after a tour through Australia, this is the first time the show has been staged in New Zealand. Auckland Music Theatre brings the revolutionary rock opera Rent to the Civic from 22 April. Based on opera masterpiece La Boheme, the various creative young characters find themselves in a New York City blasted by HIV in the late 1990's. This year's Big Gay Out headliner Annie Crummer will belt out Rent's iconic songs a central role. Camp UK comedian Julian Clary is set for a one night stand at the Auckland Town Hall on Saturday 24 April with his Lord of the Mince show. Best known in New Zealand for his late-night Sticky Moments TV game show, Clary is poised to shock audiences with his risque innudendos and camp superciliousness. Also happening in April is the Out and Loud Gala Concert, featuring ten gay and lesbian choirs from Australia, North America and here in New Zealand. Hosted by Auckland's GALS singers, the one-off event is planned for the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday 4 April. On the video below: Avenue Q's 'It Sucks To Be Me' song, performed in London.
