One of the world's most famous transgender stars has been announced as the Chief of Parade at Sydney's Mardi Gras. All set for Sydney: Amanda Lapore New York-based model, showgirl and nightclub hostess Amanda Lepore says she's thrilled to be invited for a key role in Australia's largest LGBT event. "We're delighted to have Amanda Lepore leading this year's Parade, New Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik told the Sydney Star Observer. "She's the perfect choice. Mardi Gras is about raising community visibility, and her pride in being an iconic transsexual epitomises that." Born a male called Armand in New Jersey, Lepore first realised she was transgender at age eleven, after seeing a TV documentary on the subject. She began her transition in her teenage years, and later became a prominent figure in Manhattan's nightlife. Her role as the face of brands MAC, Heatherette and Swatch mean she's been frequently seen in glossy magazine spreads, and she's recently dipped her pedicured toe into acting and singing projects. 2010's Mardi Gras Parade rolls across central Sydney on Saturday 27 February.
