Columnist George is "sleazy" or "abhorrent"

Fri 5 Feb 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Herald newspaper writer Garth George is either a dirty old man or contemptible, judging by the views of two prominent lesbians after reading George's latest homophobic column. Garth George George, a notoriously homophobic conservative Christian and long-time Herald writer, yesterday lumped male homosexuality together with child abuse, paedophilia and cruelty to animals. "I have never been able to get my head around... child abuse, paedophilia and cruelty to domestic animals... male homosexuality... and vegetarianism," writes George. Comedian Anne Speir says of George's column: "As he seems not to have a problem with female homosexuality it sounds like he harbours that age-old straight men's sleazy fantasy about two women making love," says Speir. "I only hope he's keeping his hands above the blanket!" In a more serious vein, Speir believes George's specific omission of lesbians from his list points to "the fact that he doesn't think about us girls because women don't count in his patriarchal world." Political activist Lisa Prager, taking a moment off from needling Auckland's local body politicians about their handling of the 'supercity' amalgamation, did not bother to hide her contempt for George. "I find his sort of attitude towards glbt people abhorrent, ignorant and pathetic," she says. Footnote: A GayNZ.com occasional contributor and ultra-reliable source says he is quite sure that some years ago Garth George admitted in a column that he had no problem with lesbians.
