The two female albatrosses nesting on the Otago Peninsula who have made headlines around the world as "the lesbian albatross couple" have become proud parents. A first look at the chick (via TVNZ) The area's head ranger says it's the third time a female-to-female pairing had been recorded on Taiaroa Head, which is the only mainland albatross breeding colony in the world. The gender of their chick, which hatched last week, won't be known until it is seven months old. Heather Mollins from Tourism Dunedin has asking the public for possible names for the chick, and tells TVNZ that Lady Gaga's fans on her official website have suggested it be called 'Lady Gagabratross'. All the albatross chicks in the 140 albatross-strong colony at Taiaroa Head have hatched without problems - the first time the Royal Albatross Colony has achieved a 100 percent success rate in 16 years. Department of Conservation workers are checking all 17 chicks several times a day to ensure the safety and health of the rare birds.
