Nominations close Sunday for OurFest Awards

Thu 28 Jan 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

There are only a few days left for Aucklanders to choose which of their LGBT citizens they think are most deserving of gongs at the upcoming OurFest Awards next month. Nominations for awards including 'Business of the Year', 'Community Hero of the Year', 'Lesbian of the Year', 'Performer of the Year', 'Sportsperson of the Year', and 'Young Person of the Year' close this Sunday, then a selection panel of OurFest judges will decide on three finalists per category, which will be announced on Friday 5 February. The OurFest Awards night is set for Friday 19 February at Eden Park's ASB Lounge. "We've been overwhelmed by the response so far, some really great names have been coming forward which have illustrated the range of contributions made to our communities in the last year, and the diversity of the people who make up those communities," says OurFest chairperson Kent Phillips. "We're keen to get as many nominations in as possible, so that our communities can really feel they own OurFest," he adds. "There's a lot of unsung heroes out there and it's important to recognise what we all do for each other, as well as the wider community." OurFest is also keen to speak with businesses, organizations or individuals who would be interested in sponsoring the three awards that remain unsponsored; Lesbian of the Year, Performer of the Year, and Sportsperson of the Year. Interested parties can email awards@ourfest.co.nz. The OurFest Awards nomination form can be downloaded from the official OurFest website.
