China's first-ever 'Mr. Gay' pageant will prove that the continent's gay men can be confidant, sexy, healthy and cool, say its organisers. Mr. Gay China contestants await this weekend's pageant The eight finalists, hailing from locations all over China, will appear in a 'Freestyle round', 'fashion show', and an underwear-clad question and answer segment. The event, happening this weekend, aims to improve the self-esteem of the nation's gay men. Being gay was still defined as a mental illness as late as 2001 in China, where gay sex was illegal until 1997. "I want the audience to know there are a whole bunch of people like us living in China," one of the eight Mr. Gay China contestants told The Guardian newspaper. "It's a wonderful life and it's not hidden anymore." There's more on this story, with video, on The Guardian website.
