New Jersey Senate rejects marriage equality

Fri 8 Jan 2010 In: International News

New Jersey's state Senate has defeated a bill to legalise gay marriage, by 20 votes to 14. The state offers Civil Unions but full marriage for same-sex couples was a step too far, thought the majority of the state's Senators. LGBT equality campaigners were left disappointed after months of lobbying. "We were holding out hope that we'd be able to get married and have full citizenship," said one gay equality advocate outside the Statehouse. "But now we'll have to settle for second-class citizenship. For now. We're not done fighting."
