Vatican flip flops again on gay human rights

Sun 3 Jan 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

Despite issuing a statement last year that Catholics should not discriminate against homosexuals the Vatican has just lent its support to a Spanish rally against legalising civil unions for same sex couples. Pope Benedict XVI sent a message to the rally, saying a family is "founded on the marriage between a man and a woman... because it is of paramount importance for the present and the future of humanity." On December 14 the Vatican issued a statement to the United Nations saying it opposed "violation of homosexual persons' human rights." In 2008 the Pope bizarrely suggested that saving humanity from homosexual acts is as important as saving the rainforests.
