Malawian same-sex newlyweds arrested

Sun 3 Jan 2010 In: International News

Two Malawian men have been charged with public indecency after becoming the first gay couple to marry in that country. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza publicly wed in a symbolic, traditional ceremony on Saturday. "We arrested them last night at their home and charged them with gross public indecency because the practice is against the law," a police spokesperson told Reuters. Homosexuality in Malawi carries a prison sentence of up to fourteen years. The police say the men are likely to face further charges and will be held pending further investigations.
