Discrimination against lesbians sees warden 'retire'

Wed 30 Dec 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

The warden at a Virginia, USA, women's prison is to retire after allegations that she allowed discrimination against gay inmates. The resignation followed an Associated Press report in June that inmates, mostly lesbians, who wore short hair and baggy clothes and had more masculine features had been segregated in a wing commonly referred to as the "butch wing" or "little boys wing" for more than a year. Inmates and guards said the practice stopped as soon as the media questioned warden Barbara Wheeler about the allegations.
