Sun 27 Dec 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

One of the New Zealand's most respected sports journalists, Richard Boock, agrees sport is the area of daily life most intolerant of gays and lesbians. Richard Boock Writing in his Sunday Star Times column today, Boock lauds the courage of Welsh Rugby great Gareth Thomas for revealing his homosexuality. Boock notes that "it's hard to think of a place more intolerant or non-inclusive towards gay folk than the sporting environment." His comments echo those of Thomas and Australian rugby league star Ian Roberts, who came out in 1995. Noting ironically that "sport is supposed to be for straight people," Boock highlights the hostility gays and lesbians face in sports and other areas of life.
