Govt-backed gay bar opens in China

Wed 23 Dec 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

After a delay of a few weeks following a wave of media interest in the venue which scarred off potential customers, China's partially government-funded gay bar is now officially open. The bar is located in the tourist town of Dali in the south-western province of Yunnan, Zhang Jianbo, reports the AFP news agency. The non-for-profit venue aims to provide a safe space for local and visiting LGBT people to relax. Safe-sex information and emotional and medical support are available. Recent studies have shown that HIV rates are going up in China. Particularly at risk are men who have sex with men.
