VINEGAR HILL Located 5kms North of Hunterville in the lower North Island, the enchanted Vinegar Hill camping ground is in the stunning Putai Ngahere Reserve and on the banks of the Rangitikei River. Since the early 1980s, Vinegar Hill has been a popular camping spot attracting over a thousand LGBT people and their families over summer's festival period. This year will be no exception, with a full schedule of events planned right through Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day 2015. Uretiti Beach - about 34km south of Whangarei on State Highway One - will get busy with LGBT campers from around 26 December until well into the first week of January. As far as gay camp sites go, Uretiti is second in numbers only to Vinegar Hill, with hundreds of people coming to camp out each year by the beach. The campsite fills up as it gets close to New Year's Eve, so get in early. There's always a massive party for New Years' Eve, a beautiful sandy surf beach to enjoy, and even a stunning coastal track nearby at Mangawhai Heads, plus the Waipu Caves to explore.
