A variety of fundraising and promotional events to mark World AIDS Day 2009 are planned across the globe today. Live charity concert: Alicia Keys One of the most high profile events is a special charity concert in New York by Alicia Keys - which will be streamed live and free on YouTube tonight US time (tomorrow at 2pm New Zealand time). The Pacific region is marking the day with media campaigns, community awareness stalls and other activities in Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, Fiji and Tonga, reports Radio New Zealand. In the UK, Tory leader David Cameron has promised to ring-fence a large cash fund for new campaigns to tackle HIV and reduce stigma around HIV positive people. New research suggests that one in five people with HIV in the UK have been harassed, threatened or verbally assaulted in the past 12 months. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has just announced that the International AIDS Society will draw together over 30,000 researchers, scientists, policy developers, health care providers and activists from around the globe for an ambitious conference in Washington DC in 2012.
