Male and female talent is sought for Auckland Music Theatre's all new production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning rock opera RENT, to be staged at The Civic theatre in Autumn 2010. Set in New York City's Bohemian East Village in the late 1980s, RENT tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists, writers and musicians struggling to live and pay their rent. 'Measuring their lives in love', these starving artists strive for success and acceptance while enduring their obstacles; all while celebrating their creative spirit, choosing to live life as if there is 'No Day But Today!' RENT was one of the first Broadway musicals to clearly feature gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender characters. Several names and situations in the show were inspired by the playwright's memories of his friends who died of AIDS in the early days of the HIV virus. RENT is also noted for its ethnically diverse cast, which includes many racial minorities in its ensemble and leading roles. Auckland Music Theatre have recently produced a variety of musicals including La Cage Aux Folles and Showboat, and other theatre such as gay love story Beautiful Thing. Audition registrations will close on Wednesday 2 December. Registration details are on RENT Auckland's official website.
