Rumours of another HIV arrest appear false

Thu 26 Nov 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

An internet rumour that a second Auckland man has been arrested for allegedly knowingly infecting other men with HIV and is out on bail with name suppression appears to be without any basis in fact. Blog: 2nd HIV case rumour spreads The first public appearance of the claim emerged in GayNZ.com's Forum some weeks ago, but our enquiries of the police, the Auckland Adult Sexual Assault Team and national and Auckland-based HIV agencies at that time failed to substantiate the allegation. The rumour appears to mirror the high profile arrest of HIV positive Auckland train driver Glenn Mills in May. Currently on remand in Mt Eden, he faces 28 charges relating to 14 young men and women, a number of whom have allegedly tested HIV positive after having unprotected sex with Mills. In a post titled "Second HIV spreader in Auckland?" the rumour was given more fuel today on the front page blog of Wellington-based AaronandAndy.com, claiming to be sourced to a 'jailhouse' letter from Mills, who once lived in Wellington. The Aaron and Andy website's byline is: "Our sources may not be reliable but their info is amazing!"
