What's on around NZ for World AIDS Day

Wed 25 Nov 2009 In: Events View at Wayback View at NDHA

Red ribbons, parties, shows, art, fashion and fun... here's your guide to what's happening around New Zealand to mark World AIDS Day 2009. This year's World AIDS Day theme is "HIV is close to home" - and since 2008 saw a record high number of new HIV diagnoses across the country, that's certainly true in New Zealand. For the NZ AIDS Foundation, the 1st of December each year is their biggest opportunity to fundraise and spread their message on the nation's streets. Each World AIDS Day, the NZAF proudly distributes red ribbons in exchange for donations. Its entire staff, joined by dozens of volunteers, shake their donation buckets around the country. There's still time to sign up to volunteer here. The proceeds of the NZAF World AIDS Day Street Appeal benefit the Wellness Fund which provides grants for non-subsidised treatments and expenses to people living with HIV. Funds raised at other World AIDS Day events benefit NZAF HIV prevention initiatives. Show your support by wearing a red ribbon this World AIDS Day.   Here's our run-down of World AIDS Day events around New Zealand: AUCKLAND This year's Red Ribbon Street Collection on Friday 27 November from 7am until 5pm will see NZAF World AIDS Day street collectors out in force around Auckland CBD, K' Road, Ponsony and Newmarket shopping areas. Auckland's favourite drag divas will also shake their buckets from 5pm until 7pm around the Viaduct Harbour, and hit Ponsonby and K' Road after that. The I SEE RED PARTY at Family bar (270 K' Road) starts from 7pm sharp on Sunday 29 November. Come wearing red and entre the Grande Parade of Costumes to win prizes! Check out the special DJ Station and Lex Collection fashion show. Miss Ribena, Sarah Lambourne and Steven Oates will be your hosts for this glam event, which will also star Buckwheat, Betty Ford, Tess Tickle, The Nancy Boys, Tyra Wanks and many more drag stars! Donate a note or gold coin on the door to enter. HAMILTON You can expect several spectacular shows from local and visiting drag artists including Krystal Meth, Fucshia Fucada and Symphony Damned at Shine Nightclub (161 Victoria Street) for their annual RED RIBBON PARTY from 10pm this Saturday 28 November. Enter with a generous donation please! Meanwhile, Hamilton Pride, the YWCA and INA (Maori and Indigenous South Pacific) HIV/AIDS foundation have organised two events for Tuesday 1st December. "We want to break the silence around HIV/AIDS and individuals living with it," they say. A Community Training Workshop happens 10am - 12noon at The Hub, Wintec, Anglesea St, Hamilton. Join us for an inspiring HIV/AIDS community workshop facilitated by local experts and individuals living with HIV. You can find a Wintec campus map with the Hub on it here.   The Art form the Heart Project is a public art performance commemorating World AIDS Day, on 12noon - 2pm at Garden Place. So grab your lunch and colleagues and come to Garden Place. Art from the Heart is a new project and needs your participation and support! WELLINGTON The capital's Red Ribbon Street Collection will go all day from 7 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon on Friday 27 November. But for the first time, NZAF World AIDS Day collectors will also be greeting and collecting at Wellington Airport. Volunteers will also collect in Westfield Queensgate mall in Lower Hutt. And there's a "pub and club run" in the early evening where teams of collectors go in to the pubs in central Wellington, including on Cuba Street (5.30pm – 7.30pm). Join the crew at Club Ivy for their RED PARTY kicking off at 11pm on Saturday 28 November. All three levels will be open, featuring DJ Dean from Sydney starting upstairs at 1am, and performances by Ellie Kat, Judy Chicago and Felicity Frockaccino. $5 entry goes straight to the NZAF's Awhina Centre in Wellington. Bring any spare change you have for the bucket shakers. Club Ivy's is Wellington's LGBT nightclub at 13 Dixon Street. CHRISTCHURCH Volunteers will be collecting in the Westfield Riccarton mall from 9am until 9pm on Friday 27 November, and you'll see them in the CBD's bars and clubs from 5pm until 7:30pm that evening. INVERCARGILL The team from Southland HIV/AIDS Support will be selling red ribbons on Esk Street from 9am on Friday 4 December. Contact Shona Fordyce at Q-Town Sexual Health Clinic on 03 218 1949.
