Auckland's conservative-dominated City Council will indirectly assist with the cost of running February's Big Gay Out through a Community Board contribution of $2,500. The NZ AIDS Foundation, which has taken over the running of the massive picnic and party day, applied for financial assistance towards the clean-up required after the event, which attracts tens of thousands of glbt people plus their families and friends each year. Bruce Kilmister, a gay member of the Council's Western Bays Community Board who recused himself from discussion and decision making regarding the funding request, says the $2,500 figure was chosen by Board members to be in proportion to the Grey Lynn Park Festival which receives $5,000 but attracts more people.
