Coming Out story in German Film Festival

Thu 12 Nov 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News

A sensitive coming out story will be screened in Auckland's Rialto Cinema at 7pm this Saturday evening as part of the German Film Festival. Directed by Heiner Carow - best known for The Legend of Paul and Paula - in 1989, Coming Out follows High-school teacher Philipp who is forced to take stock of his life when he meets nineteen-year-old Matthias. "For the first time he is honest with himself about his sexuality, but he is married and his wife is expecting their child," says the film's blurb. "Homosexuality is frowned upon by society at large. Philipp's feelings for Matthias spark a personal crisis, but his loneliness and despair give way to deeper self-knowledge and an acceptance of his emotions." Coming Out screened in Wellington last weekend. The German Film Festival is timed to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
