Keen footballer wants gay team for Auckland

Tue 10 Nov 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News

Scottish gay footballer Mark Shields says he'd love to play on an all-gay soccer team in Auckland, but isn't sure how popular the game is with the local community. Football fan: Mark Shields "Since I was kid in Glasgow I've played for school, university and pub teams over the years," he explains. "I was raised on football and also watch it on TV from every league and country of the world." Shields says he's looking for people to join him to form a gay team for a local league. "It would probably be a Saturday or a Sunday league," he says. "It would involve regular season games where we would play each team in the league twice as well as cup competitions. I would also like to run 5 or 7 aside charity tournaments. "We could invite teams from bars in Sydney and Melbourne to visit Auckland and compete as well as us being invited to Australia to compete in tournaments over there." Shields would like footballers with coaching and playing experience to help out with running the team - his email address is mark.shields@y7mail.com.
