Welly's lesbian library needs a new home

Sun 1 Nov 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News

Wellington's LILAC lesbian library has to move from its current home on The Terrace and needs a new home urgently. "Our landlord has a new use for our current space," LILAC librarian Helen explains. "And we have to move before the end of the year. "More and more queer women are using LILAC so this comes as a real blow for us, it would be a damn shame if LILAC has to go into hibernation," she says. "We're looking for somewhere cheap, around 20sqm, where we can install shelving on the walls. It doesn't have to be anywhere flash, just somewhere we can keep our books securely, where it is dry and has reasonable lighting, and our members can get after hours access, like for early evenings or Saturdays. "Ideally we're after somewhere in the CBD or fringes. Did we mention it needs to be cheap?" she laughs. Living with a micro budget is always a challenge, for the popular library, Helen adds. LILAC opened in September 1994, and has had already one period in recess when it was between premises. "We hope to find something soon so we can stay open with just a short break for moving. We have had three different rooms so far, all on The Terrace, but who knows where we will be next?"  Information about suitable space available for the LILAC library is warmly welcomed via email at: lilac@lesbian.net.nz.
