Thu 15 Oct 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Labour Weekend in Christchurch has been dubbed 'Proud Weekend' as Saturday sees the premier of BENT – A Little Gay Cabaret, and Sunday's Globes awards will honour local LGBT community movers and shakers. "We hope that people coming to Christchurch for the infamous Christchurch Gay Oscars (now re-named The Globes) will take this opportunity to soak up a different style of entertainment the evening before and make a real weekend of it, says BENT's Creative Producer Daniel Pengelly, from the Court Theatre's Court Jesters. "We think we have something really special to offer and something which will appeal broadly to the LGBT community and beyond. With a bit of 'tongue in cheek' humour, there's a smile in there for everyone!" Music from the BENT – A Little Gay Cabaret includes show-stopping hits from Rent, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, La Cage Aux Folles and other shows as well as pop hits from Madonna and Kylie Minogue. The show also profiles the culinary creative talents of the community by offering a dessert theatre restaurant style evening. "We wanted to create a cabaret style that people in Christchurch are not used to experiencing," BENT's business manager Jill Borland explains. "Guests will be treated to gourmet dessert during the show, which begins as soon as the doors open. "We also hope that guests will enjoy time with the cast and crew after the show as well to make this a very special experience." TALENT SHOWCASE The list of performers for BENT comprises professional, semi-professional and professionally trained singers, dancers and actors together with local NASDA students. 98% of all cast and crew, who range in age from teens – middle aged, represent the various sectors of the Canterbury LGBT community. "We hope that this founding performance will serve to kick start the development of an on-going company of LGBT performers and technical crew and of high quality cabaret-type performances in Christchurch," says Borland. "It must be said that this show is not for the prudish as there is a little 'adult' content," she laughs. "But it'll appeal to anyone who enjoys a great night out, a really good laugh, great music and dancing." Doors open for BENT at 8pm on Saturday 24 October at the Christchurch Bridge Club, 21 Nova Place - off Barbadoes St near Oxford Terrace. $35 general admission tickets include a gourmet dessert. Book at The Court Theatre box office on 03 963 0870 or on its website.
