Gay and Lesbian Singers celebrate their roots

Tue 13 Oct 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland's Gay and Lesbian Singers will get their tongues around a variety of languages for their next concerts. The theme for the choir's shows on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November is 'GALS celebrating its roots' - its members' forefathers and foremothers. "GALS members hail from far and wide," explains chairperson Jan Suckling. "The USA, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa and of course multi-generational Kiwis as well. "An eclectic range of origins means an eclectic range of music, from a Dutch song to a Samoan chant and a multi-faceted journey in between," she adds. "When I asked a couple of members what the concert meant to them, I got interesting responses. One said, 'We have international songs from many parts of the world to recognize our origins,' while the other put it this way: 'It's not just about where we come from geographically, it's also about our journey as a gay and lesbian community.'" Musical director Stephen Bowness says the choir has not previously produced a concert with songs in so many languages. Special guests returning by popular demand for the concerts are the inimitable sister act Buffy and Bimbo, who have promised to get into the spirit of the evening's theme by 'celebrating their roots' – the mind boggles.
