Mon 12 Oct 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Last week marked 11 years since young gay man Matthew Shepard was murdered in the US state of Wyoming, bringing international attention to hate crimes and their consequences, and a theatre company in Christchurch will remember him with a one-off production tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. Remembered: Matthew Shepard "One month after his death, a theatre group travelled to Laramie, Wyoming to conduct interviews with members of the community, returning later for the trial of Matthew's attackers," explain Christchurch's Hagley Theatre Company. "The interviews were then constructed as a play and we were proud to stage a popular season of The Laramie Project in 2003. Over a decade later, the original writers of The Laramie Project returned and wrote an epilogue. "Hagley Theatre Company is honoured to have been invited to take part in an international first reading of the epilogue which will take place on the 11th anniversary of Matthew's death." The show is a special presentation for one night only, from 7:30pm on Tuesday 13 October at The Open Stage, 510 Hagley Avenue. Entry is free, but tickets are strictly limited - for bookings and enquiries phone 03 364 5155 or email lo@hagley.school.nz.
