Green MP will discuss adoption law reform

Sat 10 Oct 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Green Party MP Kevin Hague will discuss the issue of adoption by same-sex couples at an upcoming Rainbow Wellington network meeting. Adoption Bill: Green MP Kevin Hague Hague has assumed responsibility for Metiria Turei's Private Member's Bill on the issue, which is currently in the Parliamentary ballot to be debated. "The proposed Bill amends New Zealand's Adoption Act to allow same-sex and de facto couples to adopt as couples, rather than simply as single people, as at present," explains Rainbow Wellington. Hague will share details of the proposed bill, then the meeting will discuss what our communities, and Rainbow Wellington in particular, can do to assist in its introduction and passing. "When the Bill is drawn from the ballot, there is going to be lots of opposition," Rainbow Wellington warns. "Come along and help us decide how best to approach this important campaign." The meeting is scheduled for 6pm, Wednesday 21 October, in Kitty O'Shea's Upstairs Bar at 28 Courtenay Place.
