UK: 'Anti-gay' slang number plates pulled

Tue 6 Oct 2009 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

British drivers won't be allowed to bid for 'D1KES' and 'F4GOT' licence plates at auction, reveals the Daily Mail newspaper. The UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has withdrawn the two plates after complaints they were offensive to gays and lesbians. The Stonewall LGBT network objected to the plates, saying they are derogatory words for LGBT people. Both plates were expected to be sold for well over £900 (NZ$1,960). The DVLA also bans other problematic plates like BU58 0MB (bus bomb), 054MA (Osama), H057AGE (hostage) and all plates beginning with JE and ending HAD - over fears about the word 'JIHAD', the Arabic term for holy war.
