Chch awards night set for Labour Weekend

Fri 25 Sep 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The red carpet will roll out again in Christchurch for its annual LGBT awards ceremony - but this year the night will have a new name and look. For she's a jolly good fellow: Miss Mole at last year's Oscars The Garden City's drag icon Miss Mole spearheaded the Chch Oscars for an amazing 26 years, but this Labour Weekend she's taking a well-earned rest as she's supported by a team of volunteer organisers who've planned the Globes 2009. Like in previous years, Christchurch's gay community citizens, business owners, community group facilitators and top entertainers are in the running for special awards on the night - but this time the event is a fundraiser for Q-Topia gay student group and the city's Rainbow Families Trust network, a local charity organisation recently set up to support young LGBT people. The Globes team tells GayNZ.com that tickets - on sale now for $20 each from the Bedford Bar or Pandoras Costume Hire - are selling well, but are strictly limited. "The night is fancy dress so dress to impress," spokesperson David Zelton says. "The MC will be outrageous drag superstar Miss Ribena from Auckland, and the night will also feature Miss Betty Ford from Auckland and Miss Gloriousole from Hamilton." Other entertainers planned include Miss Virginia Wright and her girls, a fire-eating show by Proven Performance, hot Brazilian all-female troupe Stella, drag king troupe Malcome Sex, Lola Fame, Miss Fur Purse, Miss Nova and many more - plus music from DJ Danice. "The Globes will be gay Christchurch's biggest event of the Year," promises Zelton. The event kicks off at the Bedford Bar at 8pm, Labour Day Sunday 25 October.
