Urge Bar goes blue for Prostate Cancer

Wed 9 Sep 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

K' Road's Urge bear bar is gearing up for a big month of fundraising for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. The charity is holding Blue September – a month long event raising awareness and funds to help fight a cancer which claims around 600 male lives a year in New Zealand. That death rate can be halved if men took responsibility for their health and had regular health and prostate checks, says the charity. Urge has supported the charity in the past with over $3,000 raised from a variety of events. This year the bar is teaming up with Stil Vodka and Hancocks Sprits with DeKuper liqueur to offer special Blue September cocktails all month. $3 from every drink will go the charity and will be on offer while stocks last. Then on Friday 18 September the bar is hosting a fundraising night called 'Blue Friday'. "Come dressed all in blue, get your face painted and donate to this worthy charity," says the bar's co-owner Alan Granville. "Prizes will be given out for best dressed and special blue drinks and food will be on offer." URGE EVENTS EXTRA The bar is throwing open its doors earlier than usual tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm for its monthly quiz night, with $5 per team entry and bar tabs prizes to be won. Then on Saturday 26 September, Paul Heard and Alan Granville will celebrate four years owning "the best little gay bar in the world". DJs Donald Bennett and Raj are lined up for the special night.
