Thu 27 Aug 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Hamilton's annual Mr. Gay Waikato pageant is on this Saturday night at Victoria Street's gay Shine Nightclub, with staff saying it'll be a capacity event and may well be the venue's busiest night of the year. "Your vote definitely counts as we find out just who the hottest gay guy in the Waikato is," says Shine's Tristan Laing. There are six guys in this year's pageant, aged between 19 and 44, he reveals. "Drag divas Krystal Meth and Maia Klunt will host Hamilton's hottest pageant that'll see our hunky hopefuls strutting their stuff topless, in fantasy outfits, and of course, swimwear." As usual, there will also be a question round, before the audience votes on who they think deserves to walk away with the Mr. Gay Waikato title, sash, assortment of sponsor goodies and hefty bartab. Gates open on Saturday night at 9pm, with the main show scheduled for 11pm. The event will also feature performances by Waikato favourites Fucshia Fucada, Symphony Damned and Sister Sledge along with special appearances by visiting Auckland entertainers including drag king Jak Twisted. Last year's Mr. Gay Waikato was 18-year-old Shane Pilkington, a regular at Shine nightclub, who won a $500 bar tab and lots of grooming products.
