Gay MP and ex-Labour cabinet minister Chris Carter believes he is being singled out in the MP's expenses affair because his partner is a man and not a woman. MPs have come under increasing pressure in recent weeks to divulge their expense claims for travel and accommodation. While most media heat has been on Deputy Prime Minister Bill English, Carter has been featured frequently, with his expenses illustrated by file footage and photos of his partner, Peter Kaiser. "If I was a heterosexual minister taking my husband or wife with me, it would be of no interest," he told this morning's Herald. He said that Kaiser often accompanied him on parliamentary business trips and that as Minister of Education he was only the fourth-highest traveling Minister last year, behind Winston Peters, Helen Clark, and Phil Goff.
