Sotomayor welcomed by US gays

Sun 9 Aug 2009 In: International News

The swearing in of new US Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor has been welcomed by the American glbt communities. Although she has had very few gay-related cases before her during her years as a federal judge, national gay political organizations supported Sotomayor’s nomination to the court. In nominating the first latina, and only third woman, supreme Court justice, President Barack Obama’s remarked that he wanted to nominate someone with “the empathy to understand what it’s like to be poor, or African-American, or gay or disabled or old." Sotomayor replaces retiring justice David Souter who was strongly supportive of equal treatment for LGBT people under the law.
