Disgraced Field was against Civil Unions

Wed 5 Aug 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Disgraced ex-MP Taito Philip Field, found guilty yesterday of accepting bribes and acting corruptly whilst in Parliament, was amongst those MPs who voted against the introduction of Civil Unions. Field, who has become a deeply religious man over the years, was one of 50 MPs who voted in December 2004 against allowing same-sex and defacto couples full legal recognition of their relationships. Whilst most Labour MPs voted for Civil Unions, Field, who was a union organiser with apparently Marxist views before entering politics, was one of only six Labour MPs including John Tamihere to vote no. The Civil Unions Bill was passed by 66 votes to 50.
