One of the most conservative countries in Eastern Europe has taken a significant step towards embracing same sex marriage. The Prime Minister of Albania, one of the last bastions of conservatism following the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, has announced that his party will introduce a Bill legalising same sex marriage. Acknowleding the Bill will be controversial, Sali Berisha says discrimination must become a thing of the past in modern Albania. Albania is a predominantly Muslim country with no openly gay community to speak of. The Bill was drawn up by a group of non-governmental organisations and is likely to have a rough passage in the face of religious communities which have grown in strength since the overthrow of communism almost twenty years ago.
