Wed 29 Jul 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

Same-sex marriage not on the cards for aussies Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd has said that although his office welcomes debate on the subject of gay marriage, the Australian Federal government will not support a change in legislation. The Australian Labor Party's national conference begins in Sydney tomorrow and the issue is to be tabled ahead of rallies to be held throughout Australia on Friday in support of gay marriage. "Marriage should be between a man and woman" said Rudd. "We are consistent with the policy that we took to the last election," he told ABC Radio today, stating that Labor "fully respects the integrity of same-sex relationships". Labor opposes same-sex marriage, but supports nationally consistent state-based civil union schemes.
