Seven more formal complaints against Mills

Wed 29 Jul 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

10.30AM: Seven more people have now laid formal complaints with the police regarding sexual contact with Aucklander Glenn Mills, the man accused of knowingly exposing young men and one woman to HIV infection. Glenn Mills Few details of the new complainants were given in court this morning other than that fourteen charges have been laid in connection with the new complainants who include two women and five men all under the age of 28. This brings the total number of formal complainants to fourteen, and the total number of charges to 28. Mills, a 40-year old Aucklander who was diagnosed HIV positive in May 2007 and who passed himself off as being in his early 30s on internet dating sites, appeared briefly in court for what was a largely administrative hearing. He ignored the packed courtroom which was largely filled with media representatives and kept his face turned towards the judge throughout this morning's proceedings. A media application to film the hearing was made, on the basis that further visual coverage could add to the number of complainants coming forward and that the media act as the eyes and ears of the community. The judge accepted the defence view that filming of what was essentially an administrative hearing today was not necessary. According to police charge sheets, the new victims of Mills include two women and five men aged between 18 and 28 years of age. Mills remains remanded in custody until September 23, where a pre-depositions hearing for the new charges will be addressed.  Relating to the first seven complainants, Mills will be in custody until 17 November where the crown will argue oral evidence application, expecting to take a half-day. A depositions hearing has been set down for these charges estimated to take four days, starting November 24 in relation to these charges. Any further people who have had sexual contact with Mills and believe he may have exposed them to HIV infection should contact Detective Sergeant Andy King of the Auckland Police Adult Sexual Assault Team, ph 09 302 6400. Body Positive can be contacted on 0800 HIV LINE (0800 448 5463) and the New Zealand AIDS Foundation on (09) 303 3124 for those who wish to book an HIV Rapid 'FasTEST'
