A Sunday evening festival TV season of iconic NZ-made gay and lesbian films and documentaries starts this weekend - here's the schedule. Triangle TV's line-up of programmes includes classic LGBT-themed films such as Squeeze, Twilight of the Gods and Jewels Darl along with a selection of award-winning documentaries from the recent Takataapui series screened on Maori TV. Also included amongst other short films and other documentaries is Naughty Little Peeptoe – recollections from women's shoe connoisseur, Doug George; made by Garth Maxwell and Peter Wells. Film and television makers, the Film Commission and the Film Archive have all joined together to showcase an outstanding line-up of productions from their collections - many of which have only had limited release. Triangle TV is available in central Auckland (check tuning details here) and nationwide on via Stratos TV (available on Freeview). Sunday Night Out begins at 9:30pm on 26 July, and runs for eleven weeks. Here's the schedule at a glance, with a short video trailer for the story below it all... A Death in the Family A 1986 NZ Film/Drama which won a major New York award, about the loss of a friend to AIDS. Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses Sunday 2 August Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses Christchurch's queer history, as told by its movers and shakers. This will be the 2007 doco's first TV screening. Sunday 9 August Two stories from Maori Television's Takataapui programme: One about the murder of gay man Stanley Waipouri and its aftermath, and one about the Topp Twins! Then: Jewel's Darl A TV drama from 1985, showing ex-MP Georgina Beyer in a risqué role a long way from the Beehive! Sunday 16 August People Next Door This TV doco about gay and lesbian lives caused a furore when it was released in 1994 – how times have changed! Earthtalk From Takataapui last year, a short documentary about two pakeha lesbians who are committed to living the Treaty of Waitangi. Sunday 23 August Boy This silent short film tells the story of a young male prostitute living in small-town New Zealand, who tries to expose the truth behind a fatal hit-and-run accident. Produced by Welby Ings in 2004. Beyond Gravity Richard is a glass-blowing technician who hallucinates about the end of the Earth. When Johnny, a charming and unscrupulous Italian, falls in love with him, the sky's the limit. A love story with a twist. Garth Maxwell's drama from 1988. The Making of Ramon Sunday 6 September After a week off, the Sunday Night Out returns with three short docos from Takataapui TV: 'June's Story' is about a scandalous 1920's tale of being trans. 'Transgender in Jail' explores what happens to trans people in Kiwi jails. And 'The Making of Ramon' is the biographical story of transwoman Ramon Te Wake. Sunday 13 September Naughty Little Peeptoe A 2001 Documentary. Garth Maxwell and Peter Wells direct the story of their friend Doug George, who tells the story of how high heels saved his life! Friendship is the Harbour of Joy The 2004 story of a remarkable friendship between Maori silent film star Witarina Harris and film historian Jonathon Dennis, as Jonathon was facing the end of his life from cancer. Sunday 20 September Fa'afafine Fono Takataapui's 2008 doco about the Love2Life fono, held in Auckland in 2007. Transfigured Nights 2007 fetish documentary by David Blyth, shot entirely from internet/webcam sources. Sunday 27 September Squeeze Richard Turner's iconic 1980 drama is set in an inner city Auckland, has fantastic music by Toy Love and the Marching Girls, was denied funding by the Film Commission because of marketability, speaks of the Homosexual Law Reform Bill, was picketed by Patricia Bartlett, and has great dancing and lots of small jerseys worn with high top jeans. Sunday 4 October Early Hero Festival Triangle TV's highlights from 1994 festival, including the parade down Queen Street. Lezzie Bands 2008 Takataapui doco, a nostalgic look at NZ's lezzie bands from the past. Fifty Ways of Saying Fabulous Sunday 11 October Fifty Ways of Saying Fabulous 2005 Film by Stewart Main. Set in Otago in the summer of 1975, 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous is the story of 12 year-old Billy, who is about to discover that growing up is a lot more confusing than he could have ever imagined.
