Thu 23 Jul 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A gay central Aucklander who's quarantined at home for a week after being diagnosed with Swine Flu says the H1N1 virus "feels no different to any other flu" but has suffered with headaches, lethargy, aches and a sore throat since Monday. Swine flu: Paul Rose "I've got no idea how I got it," says Paul Rose, who is a well-known figure on the Auckland gay scene and in Labour Party circles. "I started feeling ill on Monday," he tells GayNZ.com. "I woke up with a headache and sore throat, told work I couldn't go in, and went to sleep until 3pm. "The doctor told me it was Swine Flu, and I'd figured that's what I must have. It feels like a light concussion. I'm on anti-inflammatories and paracetemol." Rose is strictly quarantined in his flat until this Sunday. "It's very boring, but people have been very nice, doing grocery runs for me and leaving grapes at the door - then running off," he laughs. Eleven people have died of Swine Flu in New Zealand as the virus reaches epidemic status. There have now been over 2,500 Kiwis diagnosed with H1N1, and health officials are warning that the flu season peak is yet to come.
