NZ's first Indian gay dance party planned

Mon 20 Jul 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

With a mixture of 'Hollywood and Bollywood' music, Indian Aucklanders are invited to celebrate at a unique dance party next Friday. Party planner Ron Kumar tells GayNZ.com that the idea of an Indian gay event has been around for a while, but never advanced until now. "We'll have a real mixture of music including Bollywood hits, and colourful drag shows with our girls in beautiful Saris," he says. The Jai Ho! party night is planned for Friday 31 July at the Bollywood Club, 252 Ellerslie Panmure Highway, Auckland. Earlier this month, the New Delhi High Court struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, meaning gay sex will now no longer be a criminal offence in India. New Zealand is currently home to an estimated 104,000 people of Indian descent.
