After a popular Outtakes Film Festival recently in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, the Reel Queer team tell GayNZ.com they're all set to do it again next year. Popular doco: A scene from 'Ask Not' After a break in 2008, the Out Takes crew is pleased with the response to their film showings in the three centres in May and June, says Reel Queer's Simon Fulton. "The feedback again shows cinema-goers were generally happy with the Festival this time and are keen to see it return. "Audience numbers reflected much the same situation as usual," he adds. "Some films were very popular, while others were less so. For the guys, the variety of lightweight and upbeat offerings were well attended, while the European, subtitled, serious dramas didn't do so well - particularly the lesbian-themed ones." In Out Takes' Annual Audience Awards, GayNZ.com's pick of the 2009 Festival Patrick, Age 1.5 was joint winner with Shelter in the Best Narrative Feature category, while the inside look at the US military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy Ask Not won Best Documentary and Kiwi-made short Teddy won in the Best Narrative Short Film category. The good news is that Reel Queer is financially "in the black" after this year's Festival, so it's all systems go for 2010. "We'll be recruiting new volunteers and pushing for sponsors again as usual, so watch this space if you'd like to be involved," says Fulton.
