"Our concert will chase away your mid-winter blues with merry music-making and complimentary mulled wine and fruit cake," says the convenor of The Homophones, Wellington's gay male chorus. Chorus: Members of The Homophones rehearse The choir will perform their At Home with the Homophones concert at St Andrews on the Terrace in central Wellington on Sunday 26 July, says Mark Beehre. Like the choir itself, whose 20-odd members range in age from their 20s to their 60s, the Homophones' repertoire is a varied one, Beehre explains. "At our inaugural concert last year, the men sang in six different languages, and this year's programme will be just as eclectic. "Our new concert will include Maori waiata, a Lennon and McCartney medley, a bracket of cowboy numbers, songs from Africa, plus the crowd favourite, 'We're the men of the chorus', and more." Established in early 2008, the Homophones is a community male-voice choir focused on the joy of singing. The gay choral movement is a worldwide phenomenon and is a great way for gay men to meet in a social setting to enjoy making music together. "It's a tremendous way of building community and making new friends," says Beehre. As well as performing their own concerts, the choir has participated in a mainstream men's choral workshop, sung at two AIDS Candlelight Memorials, and entertained rest-home residents with their unique blend of fun and music. The 26 July concert is open to everyone, and the choir welcomes new members. At Home with the Homophones concert 4pm-6pm, Sunday 26 July 2009. St Andrews on the Terrace, Wellington.
