Queer disco Londoners come to Auckland

Mon 13 Jul 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The queer crew behind 'London's hippest night out' are hosting a one-off party in Auckland this Thursday as part of an international tour which includes San Francisco, Vancouver, Los Angles, Mexico City, Portland and Dublin. Horse Meat Disco is a well-known hetero-friendly queer party in London's Vauxhall, which has featured some of the world's most respected DJs includeing Maurice Fulton, James Murphy, Dimitri From Paris and more. "It's a queer, fashionista, hipster night," promoter Paul Phillips of Sohomo events tells GayNZ.com. "Creators James Hillard and Jim Stanton wanted to create an alternative party that harked back to the halcyon days of parties like The Loft and The Gallery in New York. They asked their mates to come and join them at their Sunday shindig - Severino hailing from Mantova in Italy and Filthy Luka resident of Queer Nation and lifelong disco fanatic. "Their parties soon became the talk of the town attracting a discerning mix of old time disco heads, club kids, bears, naturists and something new in gay clubs - a space where disco fans of a heterosexual persuasion could live out their fantasy of going to a gay disco club without feeling totally out of place," he explains. "This is one of the most exciting queer acts to ever come to New Zealand." Horse Meat Disco comes to Auckland to play at Vulcan Lane's Cassette Number Nine venue from 9pm this Thursday 16 July. There's more information about Horse Meat Disco on their MySpace page.
