Washington DC recognises gay marriages

Wed 8 Jul 2009 In: International News

A law recognising same-sex marriages performed in other US states and counties has taken effect in Washington DC, where a councilman says the next step is a Bill which will allow gay-marriage ceremonies in the district. Under the new law, gay and lesbian couples wed in other jurisdictions have the same benefits and rights as other married people under D.C. law, reports the Associated Press. Council member David Catania said he intended to introduce a Bill in coming months which would allow same-sex marriages to be performed in Washington. Currently, six states - Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire - currently allow same-sex marriage. New York recognizes gay marriages performed in other states.
