Mayor Banks to attend gay business meet

Wed 8 Jul 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The Hon. John Banks QSO, mayor of Auckland City, is scheduled to speak at a new LGBT business networking event tomorrow. Guest speaker: John Banks Former Gay Auckland Business Association President Mark Thomas of Momentum Consulting says the event has 25 LGBT businesspeople confirmed to attend, invited from his corporate-based contacts. "I'm very happy with the response to the idea," Thomas tells GayNZ.com. "This event is designed to compliment GABA, with a corporate focus, where businesspeople can meet and build connections." Thomas says Banks is likely to comment on Auckland's controversial Super-City plans during his 20-minute appearance. It's not the first time Banks has been a guest at an Auckland LGBT event - he appeared at GABA's Mayoral Forum in the run-up to re-election in 2007, receiving a mixed response due to his anti-gay utterances in the past, and briefly made an unannounced visit to February's Big Gay Out picnic day. For more information about tomorrow (Thursday) evening's LGBT business networking meeting, contact Mark Thomas via email at: markthomas@momentum.co.nz.
