The second issue of new local gay magazine JACK has hit the stands. GayNZ.com spoke to its enigmatic creators in an interview which shows their – er – penchant for brevity: GayNZ.com: How and when did the Jack team come together? Jack: Over time, out of necessity. GayNZ.com: Who is involved? Jack: Vivid New Zealanders. GayNZ.com: What important/interesting/necessary things aremissing from GLBT media right now? Jack: Relevance. Beauty. Humour. GayNZ.com: Where does Jack fit in on the gay media spectrum? Jack: Ultra-Violet GayNZ.com: What was the reaction to issue 1 like? Jack: Excited and Confused. GayNZ.com: Why the delay with issue 2? Jack: Good things take time. Drainage problems. Other jobs were too much. Breakup with casual partner. Parental health scare. Depression and drug withdrawal. GayNZ.com: There were rumours about 'out there' content in issue 2 - what can you tell us? Jack: The concept of 'out' is out-moded. Out implies an 'in', and we live in an age without a centre. The connotation of the word 'out', as far as the history of the gay community is concerned, is of the margins; 'out' implies an exterior, a rim, where same-sex desire has been permitted an existence; JACK is not about asking permission. And as for 'out there', if we are really to use the concept, JACK is more 'in there', a balance point, a rectifier for the times. Chris Banks - 6th June 2005
