Frustration building over Obama's inaction

Wed 24 Jun 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

USA gay rights advocates are beginning to express frustration that President Obama has not moved on his pre-election promise to repeal the controversial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law, which prohibits homosexuals from serving openly in the American military. President Obama Obama has extended new benefits to same-sex civilian partners of all federal employees, fueling speculation of an imminent change in the military policy. However, it appears Obama and Congressional lawmakers, many of whom also have promised repeal, are playing a game of chicken with each waiting for the other to make the first move on the sure to be controversial legislation. Meanwhile, 77 Republican congressmen have this week forwarded a letter to Obama calling for an immediate end to enforcement of the Don't Ask Don't Tell rule which bars gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The letter describes the policy as wrong-headed and a failure which threatens national security and is unfair to gays and lesbians.
