A neon-lit bar, spa pool, sauna, dancefloor and pool table are all lined up for Auckland's newest monthly women's night, which the organisers describe as "very new for New Zealand." "Velvet Alley will be a classy event which we know is different and hope Auckland women will enjoy," organiser Jenni James tells GayNZ.com. Planned for the fourth Saturday of each month, the nights feature a dancefloor/bar area, and a spa pool area with lockers, showers and towels available. Women can lounge in sarongs provided in the strictly women-only night. Both lesbians, James and her business partner say they have previous experience in hospitality and have done some market research into events designed for lesbian and bi women. "People have been telling us they wanted something new and different on the scene. We think we're creating a space women will want to stay in all night." Opening for the first time at 9pm on Saturday 27 June, Velvet Alley will be located upstairs at 25 Cross St - parallel to K' Road - with a $10 entry charge and a complementary signature drink for the first 50 women through the door.
